Hub of Africa Fashion Week 2024 Wraps Up: A Celebration of African Creativity

The vibrant city of Addis Ababa recently played host to one of the most anticipated events in the fashion calendar, the Hub of Africa Fashion Week. Running from January 9th to 14th, this week-long extravaganza showcased the brilliance and innovation of designers from across the continent.

The event kicked off with a spectacular runway show by Samra at the Hyatt Regency Addis Ababa, setting the stage for a week filled with runway presentations, panel discussions, workshops, and masterclasses. The ETMetro Gallery provided an intimate setting for designers from Cameroon, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Rwanda to showcase their collections, highlighting the rich diversity of African fashion.

A significant highlight was the Emerging Designers Platform, a dynamic showcase featuring six promising young designers. Their presentations were not just displays of fashion; they were statements of creativity, innovation, and the future of African design.

Friday's showcase at Kana Studio Warehouse was a grand affair, featuring collaborations with the British Council CDNA program and presenting the work of nine talented Ethiopian designers. This emphasized the importance of global partnerships in propelling the African fashion industry forward. The second half of the evening featured a remarkable collection from eight designers, closing the runway shows in style.

The event concluded with the Shop the Runway Marketplace at Hyatt Regency Addis Ababa, where brands connected directly with consumers, offering a unique shopping experience. The creative art experience-sharing session, in collaboration with the British Council and LinkUp Addis, brought together designers and art enthusiasts for an enriching discussion.

One of the notable aspects of this year's Hub of Africa Fashion Week was the participation of Kenyan designers, adding a unique flavor to the diverse mix of talent. The event's success was not just in its runway presentations but also in its commitment to dialogue and education. Panel discussions on manufacturing in Africa and securing intellectual property rights provided valuable insights to the fashion community.

The event showcased over 30 designers, with more than 100 models and an excess of 1,000 participants. As an agglomeration of creatives, the Hub of Africa Fashion Week was made possible through the generous contributions of sponsors like Castel, co-organizer Jorka, and key partners such as Hyatt Regency Addis Ababa, Ethio Telecom/Tele Birr, Ethiopian Airlines, Coca Cola, Mac Cosmetics, Soreti Wellness and Spa, Kana, ETMetro Gallery, LaGare Addis Ababa, FA254, British Council, We Decor, and many others.

As the fashion world reflects on this successful edition, the Hub of Africa Fashion Week once again proves to be a platform that nurtures talent, fosters collaboration and promotes the rich tapestry of African fashion on the global stage.
